They call it harmless “optimization.”

Earth suspects otherwise. Rumors are leaking from inside the Core…

To investigate without raising alarms, you’ll enter the Core undercover as a beginner robot-trainer.

How AI Thinks (and Learns)

Welcome deeper into the Data Lab, Agent.

You’ve watched one robot learn from your examples.

Now we’ll peek inside the ‘brain’ of the machine:

Remember: you’re not just watching AI learn. You’re learning how to keep humans in charge.

  • How does it turn data into guesses and outputs?
  • Why does it sometimes make serious mistakes… or even make things up?
  • What is AI actually learning from?
Learning From Examples

Every AI system begins like a curious but clueless student.

On its own, it knows nothing.

It only learns from the examples people feed it:

  • pictures (faces, animals, streets, objects)
  • sounds (voices, music, alerts)
  • words (stories, comments, search queries)
  • numbers (scores, ratings, measurements)
  • click patterns (what people open, ignore, or buy)

It looks for things that seem to belong together:

  • round shapes + eyes → “face”
  • whiskers + pointy ears → “cat”
  • words (stories, comments, search queries)
  • “hello” + certain responses → “casual chat”

The more examples it gets, the more confident its guesses become.

“AI doesn’t start with knowledge. It starts with data.”

But that data:

  • comes from specific people, communities, and infrastructures
  • may not represent everyone equally

That means:

The people who choose and label the data quietly decide what the AI can see… and what it can’t.
Spotting Patterns, Not Meaning

AI does not understand the world the way you do. It doesn’t feel, or “get” meaning.

It is spotting patterns and calculating what’s most likely.

For example:

  • When you type “see you tom—”, your phone predicts “tomorrow” because millions of humans have written that before.
  • When a chatbot writes an answer for you, it isn’t “understanding” your topic... it’s remixing patterns of sentences it has seen before.
  • When an image model draws a dragon, it isn’t dreaming up dragons from nowhere... it’s combining scales, wings, colors, and shapes it has already seen in its training data.
AI guesses probabilities, not understanding.

    This process is called pattern recognition, the heart of machine learning.

    It’s powerful, but it doesn’t know what any of it means.

      The Training Cycle — From Data to Decisions

      Under the surface, most AI systems follow a loop like this:

      Collect Data

      Humans upload or gather thousands (or millions) of examples.

      Label Data

      Each example gets tags like “cat,” “dog,” “tree,” “smiling,” “sports,” or “spam.”

      Train the Model

      The AI adjusts its internal math so its guesses line up with those labels.

      Test It

      People check how often it’s right, and where it fails.

      Tune It

      Developers fix mistakes with new examples, better labels, or changes to the model.

      Deploy It

      The AI is put into the real world to make predictions, answer questions, or generate images and text.

        Then the process repeats, each round sometimes better, sometimes weirder.

        Sometimes the model:

        • improves
        • gets overconfident
        • overfits (memorizes training examples but fails on new ones)
        • hallucinates (makes things up that sound right but aren’t)
        Imagine a sponge soaking up examples, squeezing out guesses, then being rinsed and retrained again and again.
        When Learning Goes Wrong

        If the examples are unbalanced, bias sneaks into the model.

        Examples:

        • Train only on light-colored cats, and dark cats become “errors.”
        • Train a facial recognition system mostly on lighter-skinned faces, and it will misrecognize or miss darker-skinned faces.
        • Train on mostly one gender in job data, and predictions skew toward that gender.
        • Train a search engine mostly on biased webpages, and it can serve hurtful results.
        • Train a “risk score” tool on unfair arrest or sentencing records, and it can label some communities as “high risk” just because of biased history.
        Bias (missing patterns + distorted patterns) → incorrect predictions → unfair outcomes.

        This is why people say:

        Garbage in, garbage out.

        The AI can’t look at its own data and say, “This isn’t fair.”

        To fix this, humans have to:

        • review who is represented in the data
        • notice who’s missing or misrepresented
        • rebalance or rebuild the training set before trusting the model

        Earth Headquarters note:

        Bias hides inside patterns.
        Agent, your job is to look for what’s missing, not only what’s visible.
        Feedback, Fine-Tuning, and Loops

        Training doesn’t always stop after the first round.

        AI often keeps learning from feedback:

        • thumbs up / thumbs down
        • “👍/👎” buttons
        • edited answers
        • new examples added over time

        This creates a feedback loop.

        When AI gets something wrong, humans can:

        • add better examples
        • relabel confusing data
        • reward good outputs
        • discourage harmful ones

        That’s called fine-tuning, like coaching a robot so it stops making the same mistake again and again.

        But there’s a catch:

        • If feedback mostly comes from one type of user, the model may improve only for them.
        • If reviewers never test how the AI treats certain groups, unfair behavior stays hidden.
        • Random, noisy feedback can confuse the model and push it away from good behavior.
        Good feedback helps AI improve.
        Noisy, one-sided, or careless feedback can quietly make it worse.

        Also important:

        More data doesn’t always mean smarter AI, not without careful review.
        Why AIs Sometimes Make Things Up

        Large language models, like chatbots, sometimes hallucinate.

        That means:

        • they invent “facts” that sound right but aren’t true
        • they make up authors, book titles, or articles
        • they misquote sources or dates
        • they mix real details with fiction in confident-sounding ways

        Why does this happen?
        Because the model is doing pattern prediction, not truth-checking.

        In its “mind,” the question becomes:

        What words usually come next in texts like this?

        …not:

        What is actually true right now?

        So the AI can sound sure of itself, even when it’s wrong.

        Agent Reminder:

        Chatbots and generators can be helpful tools,
        but they still need human fact-checking and common sense.
        Who Stays Responsible?

        No matter how advanced an AI looks, humans still decide:

        • which data to feed it
        • what labels to apply
        • which goals matter most (speed? accuracy? fairness? creativity?)
        • when to stop training
        • where and how it’s allowed to be used

        AI can process huge amounts of information faster than we can, but it cannot choose values.

        AI may learn patterns, but only people teach purpose.

        Good practice means humans:

        Audit

        Regularly test behavior on many groups and tasks.

        Question

        Who might this help? Who might this harm? Who is left out?

        Adjust

        Change data, labels, or goals when needed

        Refuse

        Say no to AI where risks are too high or unfairness can’t be fixed.

        That’s why humans still need to stay in the loop.
        Different Ways of Learning

        Digital City mostly trains AI for:

        • speed
        • efficiency
        • measurable accuracy (according to specific metrics)

        But around the world, many knowledge systems define intelligence differently:

        • listening and noticing
        • caring for others
        • respecting land and ancestors
        • staying in balance with people and environment
        • taking responsibility for relationships

        In those views, “smart” doesn’t just mean being correct quickly.

        It can mean being kind, careful, curious, cooperative, and responsible.

        Imagine an AI trained first on your community’s stories, languages, and values.

        • What would it consider ‘intelligent’?
        • What would it protect?
        • How would it treat people?
        Machines can learn patterns, but only humans can learn kindness.
